Up until the 19th century, to be a copyist or pasticheur was a respectable artistic profession. During the 17th century more than half of the paintings that changed hands were copies. Over the past century though, already undermined by the invention of photography, this long-established craft has become confused in the popular imagination, largely through sensationalist media coverage, with deliberate attempts to deceive.
